Getting your website online

1. Domain Names - eg: www.yourcompany.co.nz

A domain name is simply the address of your website. It's what people use to go directly to your site without having to use a Search Engine and find you in a list of 500,000 businesses!

Basically, if you're selling products internationally you need to get a Domain name that ends in .com because it's not completely associated with any particular country.

If your selling to a New Zealand market, you're better off with .co.nz so that the website viewers will feel more secure knowing it's a New Zealand business.

Alternatively, just email the names you want, and we'll check for you. We charge $50 plus GST to register domain names for you.

Warning: If you let someone else register a name for you, make sure they put YOUR name as the Registered Owner. Some design companies will put it under their account, so officially, they own it, and if you ever have a problem with them, they can basically hold it for ransom! We put it in YOUR name.
 

2. Email Addresses - eg: you@yourcompany.co.nz

Once you have a domain name, you can set up email addresses using it, e.g. you@yourcompany.co.nz. As well as looking more professional, it means that anybody you send an email to will see you have a website and hopefully go and have a look.

"Note for the real beginners reading this, the way to recognise the difference between an email address and a website address is that an email address will have an '@' symbol eg: you@yourcompany.co.nz and a website address will have 'www' eg: www.yourcompany.co.nz "

3. Hosting your website - Renting space on the internet

Essentially, Website Hosting is simply renting space on the internet. The main consideration is whether the space you rent suits the website you get built.

We recommend that if we build you a website, you let us Host it as well. However, if you already have a host set up, we can accommodate that as long as you tell us in advance so we can build the website to suit.

We are also happy to provide hosting for websites we haven't built.

The most important facts about choosing a host:

  • They must have back up generators in case the power goes off
     
  • They must have back up phone lines connected to the internet, in case the main line goes down.
     
  • They must have a big enough connection to the internet so lots of people can look at your website at the same time.
     
  • They must have some kind of Statistics Reporting to show the details about the visitors to your website.
